  • Abstract

Nurturing scarce talent is a significant challenge in emerging economies like India. Unlike developed economies, relatively few higher institutions of higher education exist, compared to the sheer demand for admission. Coaching classes for higher education, therefore, play a key role in mentoring and preparing students for admission tests to these exclusive institutions. The coaching class industry, however, is yet to make the transition from a fragmented, unorganized sector to a consolidated and organized form. Bansal Classes is a well-known coaching institute in Kota city in the Indian state of Rajasthan specializing in coaching students for the admission test, the JEE (Joint Entrance Exam) to the most prestigious technology institute of India – the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). The case illustrates the challenges related to growth in a family managed business that is at a stage of transition from first generation to second and manifesting signs of struggle to build a long-term sustainable business. The institute has already opened up its new campus, started offering courses in Hindi language and also started its own school to facilitate offering a complete package of secondary education to students. It has several plans for expansion either stalled or in the pipeline such as that of expanding through virtual classrooms and in metropolitan cities. But these growth plans have been difficult to implement and they are confronted with the challenge of achieving a balance of family and professional management in their top management team.
